Gargoyles jutting out from the northern bell tower of cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, seen from rue de la Cité.

Most Gargoyles represent evil, with their fearsome appearance reminding the faithful of the perils of sin. Sculpture in Paris of the Middle Ages had a superiority as compared to the neighboring regions, especially as concerns statuary because the city enjoyed a concentration of ideal raw materials, so many construction sites and experienced craftsmen who spread their their know-how through their apprentices.
