The Vendôme column seen from the west side of place Vendôme.

Built in 1810, colonne Vendôme was toppled on May 16th 1871 under the Commune of Paris whose leaders considered the column a monument to militarism, barbarism, brute force, false glory, a negation of international law and a permanent insult from victors to the vanquished. The column was rebuilt in 1875 under the direction of architect Alfred-Nicolas Normand.
